🌿How to hear God’s voice in everyday life
January 31, 2025
Do you sometimes feel like God is trying to get your attention?

Maybe you sense God at times, but you wish you could hear Him more clearly—or you're not sure whether it's really God or just your own thoughts and desires.

One of the biggest struggles in Christian life is learning to recognize God's voice in the midst of all the noise and distractions of daily life.

God is always speaking, and He's speaking to you and me. The real question is—are we paying attention?

Are Your Thoughts Helping or Hindering You?

Before we can clearly hear God's voice, we need to recognize and remove the noise that gets in the way—especially the limiting beliefs that cloud our thinking. Many times, our own thoughts and doubts become the biggest barriers to recognizing God's leading.

That's why I want to invite you to my free workshop, Renew Your Mind & Overcome Limiting Beliefs.

In this workshop, we'll explore how to identify and replace thoughts that keep you stuck, with the truth of God's Word—so that you can walk in greater confidence and clarity.

Now, let's dive into how to hear God's voice in everyday life.

Recognizing the Shepherd's Voice

Jesus makes a beautiful promise in John 10:27:

"My sheep listen to my voice; I know them, and they follow me."

As His children, we're meant to hear, recognise, and follow His voice. Hearing God's voice isn't just for "special" people or people in full-time ministry—it's for you. God wants a personal, daily relationship with you where His voice guides, comforts, and directs you.

So, how do we learn to hear Him more clearly? It starts with creating space to listen.

A Culture of Noise vs. The Still, Small Voice

We live in a world filled with constant noise—social media, daily responsibilities, entertainment, and our own racing thoughts. And we expect God to speak in obvious or dramatic ways, but most of the time, He speaks in a still, small voice (1 Kings 19:12).

That means we need to be intentional about quietening our heart to hear Him. God speaks through His Word, through His Spirit within us, through wise counsel, and even through circumstances. But if we don't pause to listen and notice, it's easy to miss His leading.

An Invitation to Stillness

This week, I encourage you to make space to hear from God, not just in moments of crisis but as part of your daily life.

📝 Action Step: 5 Minutes of Focused Listening

Find a quiet place where you won't be interrupted and set aside just five minutes to listen. Here's how you could do that:

1️⃣ Pray and invite God to speak. (Example: “Lord, I'm here and ready to listen. Speak to me and help me to hear)

2️⃣ Be still. Sit in silence, resisting the urge to fill the space with words or distractions.

3️⃣ Pay attention to what comes to mind. A scripture? A sense of peace? A nudge toward something? A person's name?

4️⃣ Write it down. Keeping a listening journal can help you recognize patterns in how God speaks to you.

5️⃣ Respond. If God brings something to your heart, whether it's a word of encouragement, conviction, or direction, act on it.

At first, this might feel unfamiliar, but the more you practice listening, the more you will learn to recognize God's voice.

A Prayer for You

Father, thank You for being a God who speaks. I don't want to rush through life without hearing Your voice and having your guidance. Please sharpen my spiritual ears to recognise Your voice more clearly. Help me to quiet my heart, tune out distractions, and trust that You are leading me. Speak to me in ways I can understand, and give me the faith to follow where You lead. In Jesus' name, Amen.

Listening is a Journey

The more time we spend with God, the more familiar His voice becomes. He's always speaking, always ready to lead us, and always inviting us into deeper communion with Him.
