5 Min Life Coach - The Myth of Positive Thinking September 23, 2013 |
Hello It's been a while since my last newsletter. The Lord led me to take time out and rest, and I've learned not to argue with Him! I highly recommend doing things at God's pace and in response to His leading. Life continues to offer many challenges, I hardly know anyone who HASN'T gone through tough battles. When you are going through the mill it doesn't seem fair and it can look like God has abandoned you. But that's not true, God LOVES you, He wants the best for you, He IS faithful and His promises are ALWAYS true. When God sent the children of Israel to take the promised land, they had to fight for it. God had promised it to them, but they had to step out and actively take the land that God had given to them. Please don't sit back and passively accept what life throws at you. Remind yourself what God has promised you, dust yourself down, tell yourself the truth from God's perspective and ask the Lord, "What do you want me to do?" Then listen to see what He will say to you. Decide to trust His leading, follow Him closely and rely on His wisdom rather than your own or other people's. Shake off discouragement and dare to BELIEVE. Be expectant, get ready, make preparations, and go into battle for your promised land. The next coach training course starts on Wednesday 9th October TO REGISTER OR LEARN MORE, VISIT Today's Coaching Moment - The Myth of Positive ThinkingPositive thinking and self-help strategies are widely promoted as ways to make sure we fulfil our potential and overcome obstacles. There are a lot of self help books that say all you need to do is think positive thoughts and you'll eventually become and receive what you think and say if you do it consistently. The danger with this way of thinking is that it suggests you can have whatever you want. There's no mention of your desires needing to line up with God's word and being part of His will and purpose, AND in His timing. You can think or say over and over again, "I am a best selling author," but you won't actually become a best selling author unless you have talent and a great idea and take all the necessary steps to make it happens. You CAN focus intently on something you want to happen, and do whatever it takes to help make sure it does come about, BUT if you want to live life fulfilled, whatever you go after needs to be in God’s will and timing. The Bible clearly teaches us to focus on the good, and about the value of positive thoughts, and the power of our words,and it leaves us in no doubt that we need to transform our thinking: Do not conform any longer to the pattern of this world, but be transformed by the renewing of your mind. Then you will be able to test and approve what God's will is His good, pleasing and perfect will Romans 12:2 The apostle Paul talked a lot about renewing your mind and thinking and meditating on good and positive things: Finally, brothers, whatever is true, whatever is noble, whatever is right, whatever is pure, whatever is lovely, whatever is admirable, if anything is excellent or praiseworthy, think about such things. Philippians 4:8 Thinking positively IS a necessary step toward transforming and renewing your mind. But because "Positive Thinking" is associated with self help and the New Age movement, I prefer to refer to it as "thinking positively." Positive thinking IS Biblical when you renew your mind THROUGH God's love and power, WITH the help of the Holy Spirit. If you think about it Christian's have good reason to be positive, we know God and live in the light of His love and grace, empowered by His Spirit at work in us, we live life blessed. Being joyful is a by product of having a healthy, life giving relationship with Jesus. Our Father has called each one of us to great purpose BUT we need to be sure that we walk out our calling with vision born out of the Holy Spirit's leading rather than the latest self-help fad. We need to be wary of strategies that lure us away from dependence on God and encourage us to depend on our selves and our own effort. When we follow the self improvement route we can easily become caught up in having faith in our faith, rather than having faith in God. And life becomes a struggle when everything is born of hard work and diligence rather than obedience to God and reliance on the Holy spirit. Self help strategies sound good, they seem plausible, and often seem to be supported by Scripture. But I caution you to be wary of anything that leads you to rely on your own efforts rather than on God working in and through you. God doesn't put heavy burdens on us, His yoke is easy and His burden is light. He doesn't want to us to do penance, He doesn't insist that we climb every mountain, sometimes He invites to go around instead. Letting the mistakes and failures of yesterday dominate your thinking today robs you of joy in the now and of future happiness. It can cause you to miss today's opportunities The key to success is to allow the Holy Spirit to lead and guide you. We are called to change things through His Spirit rather than by our own strength and willpower. Ask the Lord to show you His ways and empower you through His Spirit. When you rely on God, renew your thinking with His Word, take your thoughts captive, and train yourself to agree with what HE says about you and your situation, you will be transformed by the renewing of your mind and begin to tap into the power of authentic positive thinking.
