God Incidences - It Happened By Design

There are two ways to view time, chronological time, chronos, and strategic moments when there is something more than just the chronological passing of time.

At these strategic moments, different layers of life and reality converge and provide opportunity. This kind of time is called kairos.

For Christians, this convergence of people, places, times, and events, is more than coincidence. It is God at work shaping His people through strategic moments and events.

I dont know why or how things work out the way they do in those kairos moments yet I do believe that God is behind the events. For believers, there are no such things as coincidences, just "God-incidences."

Sometimes when you get an idea to do something, it isn't just your idea, it is the Holy spirit prompting you. It can be something as simple as picking up the phone to call a friend you haven't spoken to in a while, only to discover that they wanted to speak to you but couldn't find your number.

Or being on vacation many miles from home and 'bumping' into people from your home town who need shelter and counsel. It is good when you are in the right place at the right time, those moments are very sepcial.

God often orchestrates events, even to the extent of having you travel home by a different route because He wants you to cross someone's path for a particular purpose – a "God incidence".

God gets you to the right place, at just the right time, a lot of more of the time then you recognise.

You don't always know at the time that a "nudge" or a "thought" to do something is God leading you. I suspect that God gets you to the right place, at just the right time, more than you know.

You are a child of God and God is working in you and through you. As you respond to his call to follow, God produces in you desires and actions that both please Him and fulfil His purposes.

The longer I live, the deeper my sense of awe and wonder. God knows us personally (Psalm 139). He regularly works in our lives (Rom 8:28). He gives us special abilities to serve him and bless his people (Rom 12:6-9).

Don't be surprised when the Lord puts you in the right place, at the right time, to be a blessing to other people. Be more awake to the possibility of God using you in everyday situations.

God works in history and he also accomplishes His will through "ordinary" people at just the right time. He works in you and through you in "God-incidences."

Here is an extract from an email

After Sept. 11 ... I happened to call a man on business that I didn't know and have not, nor will ever, talk to again. But this day, he felt like talking.

He was head of security of a company that had invited the remaining members of a company who had been decimated by the attack on the Twin Towers to share their office space. With his voice full of awe he told me stories of why these people were alive and their counterparts were dead, and all the stories were just 'little' things.

As you might know, the head of the company got in late that day because his son started kindergarten.

Another fellow was alive because it was his turn to bring donuts.

One woman was late because her alarm clock didn't go off in time.

One was late because of being stuck on the NJ Turnpike because of an auto accident.

One missed his bus.

One spilled food on her clothes and had to take time to change.

One's car wouldn't start.

One went back to answer the telephone.

One had a child that dawdled and didn't get ready as soon as he should have.

One couldn't get a taxi.

There were other stories that I hope and pray will someday be gathered and put in a book.

The one that struck me was the man who put on a new pair of shoes that morning, took the various means to get to work but before he got there, he developed a blister on his foot. He stopped at a drugstore to buy a Band-Aid. That is why he is alive today.

Now when I am stuck in traffic, miss an elevator, turn back to answer a ringing telephone....... all the little things that annoy me, I think to myself, this is exactly where God wants me to be at this very moment.

May God continue to bless you with all those annoying little things and may you remember their possible purpose.
